Postgraduate International Student of the Year award to Sina Khatami
Mr Khatami is a PhD candidate with the environmental hydrology and water resources research group in the Department of Infrastructure Engineering. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad (Iran) in 2010, and also has a Master of Science in water resources engineering from Lund University in Sweden.
In April 2014, he moved to Australia to do his PhD in water resources engineering at the University of Melbourne, but he is also committed to community service, which played a big part of his being chosen for the award by CISA.
“I’ve enjoyed the opportunity of being involved in student activism, representation, and leadership in our multicultural environment,” he says.
Since joining the University of Melbourne, Mr Khatami has been involved with a range of student representative activities including as: a student advocacy officer with the Department of Infrastructure Engineering; a councillor with the University of Melbourne Graduate Student Association (GSA); GSA International Student Officer; a student representative on the University’s Research Higher Degree Committee (RHDC); and as President of the GSA, since February this year.
After the 2015 earthquake in Nepal, he worked closely with the Melbourne University Nepalese Students Society (MUNSS) to assist with raising over $10,000.
During his time as a student representative he has advocated for the introduction of internships to PhD programs, to provide graduate students with professional development and industry networking opportunities. This year he has been working on a campaign for all Victorian graduate students to have access to concessional public transport.
