The Honourable Alex Chernov AC QC, Governor of Victoria, and Mrs Elizabeth Chernov cheerfully dodged rain showers on Monday to tour the Parkville Precinct.

Beginning at the Peter Doherty Institute, the tour proceeded to the Melbourne Brain Centre, the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, the Bio21 Molecular Science and Biotechnology Institute and the Murdoch Childrens Institute.

The Governor has a long history with the University. He was an undergraduate student at the University in the 1960s, where he met his future wife, Elizabeth. In 1992 he joined the Council of the University of Melbourne, and in 2004 he was elected Deputy Chancellor. In 2009 he was elected Chancellor, a position he held until being appointed Governor of Victoria in 2011. Mrs Chernov and their three children are also graduates of the University.

After the tour the Governor praised the Parkville Precinct. He said it was a unique concentration of world-standard higher education and research institutions that engage in collaborative work with the view to providing a positive social outcome to our community and beyond.

“The precinct is a major reason why Melbourne drives Australia’s biomedical and life sciences sector and the country’s knowledge economy,” he said.

“The scale of this contribution cannot be properly understood without a personal visit to these great institutions.”

The tour was hosted by Professor James McCluskey, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), and was attended by Professor Sharon Lewin, Director of the Peter Doherty Institute, Professor Stephen Smith, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, Professor Geoffrey Donnan, Director of the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, Professor Tony Bacic, Director of the Bio21 Molecular Science and Biotechnology Institute and Professor David Vaux, Deputy Director of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute.
