Just like owning a car but better – five GoGet spaces now on campus

October 16 / 187

The University has joined with car share network GoGet as part of its focus on social and environmental sustainability, and there are now five car share vehicles located across campus.

The cars are easy to use. Drivers book a car online or through the app for as little as an hour, swipe into the vehicle with a Smart Card and drive away. University of Melbourne staff get free membership, and students get special rates ($6.55 an hour plus .40 cents a kilometre, with petrol and insurance included). Visit GoGet's unimelb page to learn more and sign up.

Carshare offers a sustainable, cost effective transport option for staff, students and the wider community, and allows people to live without owning a car.

Transport and Parking Coordinator Anh Castles says what's unique about the carshare spaces at Parkville campus is their urban setting.

“The spaces plug the campus into the transport network and draw more people on site,” she says, “connecting the University to its wider community, and adding to a healthier and socially conscious campus lifestyle.

“Car-sharing reduces congestion on our roads, and removes the costs and inconveniences of car ownership for those participating, including the overheads of petrol, registration, maintenance and parking.”

Early this year, the University trialled two carshare space in the John Medley car park, with such success that three further carshare spaces are now being launched.

You can find the carspaces at Gate 4, off Swanston Street, John Medley, and on the corner of Bouverie and Church Streets.
