Counting our multiple mathematics awards
The medal is the premier career award of the Australian Mathematical Society (AMS). It is awarded every two years on the basis of an individual's research prominence and service.
The AMS' citation called Professor Hall "one of the most influential statisticians of our time". He was commended for his "exceptional record of research accomplishment, evidenced by his numerous publications in the top ranking journals".
Professor Hall said he was pleased to receive this recognition from his peers and colleagues.
He is the third consecutive University staff member to receive the medal: his fellow mathematicians Professor Tony Guttmann and Professor Hyam Rubinstein received it in 2006 and 2008 respectively.
Professor Hall said the three consecutive awards recognised the department's research excellence and leadership in mathematics and statistics.
"The fact that we now have a 'hat trick' of these awards demonstrates the department's remarkable strengths in both areas," he said.
