ARC grant results ensure research excellence and impact

The latest Australian Research Council (ARC) funding round will boost the University’s capacity to make a lasting impact through its research, according to the University of Melbourne’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor James McCluskey.

The University received more than $41 million in funding from the ARC for 104 successful projects in this latest round of grant funding, with a success rate of over 22 per cent for Discovery Projects, attesting to the strength and quality of its research in a very competitive funding environment.

“We’re obviously delighted by the success of all our grant recipients, and especially encouraged by the breadth and depth of the new research that will be possible as a result of the ARC funding,” Professor McCluskey said.

“As a University research community, we celebrate the achievements of our grant winners, mindful of the huge effort made across the whole University, including the work of many unsuccessful applicants.”

While happy with the scope of success in today’s announcement, Professor McCluskey said the sense of confidence such a result instilled was just as important.

“The ARC is one of the few pure research funding sources for many of our scientists in arts, humanities, social and physical sciences, and performing arts among others. This public funding is vital for them to deliver on their innovation promises in tackling some of the nation’s biggest challenges.

Among the University’s projects to receive funding are:

* An analysis of how using genetics to rescue two threatened species could aid future conservation efforts

* A development project to improve environmental stress tolerance of corals and reefs

* A mathematical framework that could lead to the design of new, low-cost networks to support communication, power, transportation and other industries

* New technologies for more powerful and lower-cost cloud computing

* Research into how DNA affects human characteristics and unique traits

* Exploration of how galaxies evolve based on data from the large Hubble Space Telescope program targeting galaxy clusters.

In total, the University received 79 Discovery Project grants, 17 Discovery Early Career Researcher awards, 7 Linkage, Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities grants and 1 Discovery Indigenous grant.
