November 11 / 73

What is your unit?

Publishing Services in Marketing and Communications Division

What is your job title?

Officially - Graphic Designer. Unofficially – troubleshooter!

How long have you been with the University of Melbourne?

About seven years

How did you come to work at the University?

The short story is: After graduating with a BA in Graphic Design, I lived and worked in Ireland for three-and-a-half years. Soon after returning home, I started working at the University as a graphic designer at the (then) Design and Print Centre. I transferred over to Marketing and Communications in 2006 have been here since…

Describe your  typical day

Coffee first. Then straight into it – with phone queries, email queries, meetings, more emails and designing (between the emails and phone queries).

What is it about your job that holds your interest or is particularly satisfying?

When you see the finished, printed product. It’s most satisfying when you know how much effort and negotiation went into getting the product designed, approved, printed and delivered - often in a short time frame – and it returns looking as you intended.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

You are responsible for your own actions and not anyone else’s.

What is something about yourself that most of your colleagues wouldn't know?

I collect magnets, but only touristy ones from places other than Melbourne. It’s an economical way for people to buy me souvenirs when they go on holidays. My wall is missing magnets from most of Eastern Europe…hint, hint.
Where do you buy your coffee on campus?

Blueprint. Jason there makes the best coffee.

What do you like most about the University?

My work team. I have been in my team for a long time, we make an awesome team and great friends. I enjoy my job because of them.
