My Melbourne with Yovanna Adamis

November 10 / 49

What is your unit?

Careers and Employment

What is your job title?

Careers Consultant

How long have you been with the University of Melbourne?

Six years

How did you come to work at the University?

Prior to coming to the University, I worked as an employment consultant and trainer overseas and in Australia assisting clients from diverse occupational and cultural backgrounds. When the position was advertised I saw it as a fantastic opportunity to join the University and support students.

Describe your typical day

During semester there’s high demand to develop and deliver a range of career development seminars as well as one-to-one careers consulting to students and recent graduates. My role involves all aspects of event organisation, developing resources and other promotional material, interpreting and reporting graduate destinations and labour market information.  I collaborate with faculty and student centre staff and other affiliated institutions to deliver targeted careers programs.

Employer, recruiter and alumni liaison is also critical and I organise their involvement in workshop programs. Supervision of casual staff is another aspect of my role and throughout the year I contribute to a range of events such as the Graduate Careers Fair.

What is it about your job that holds your interest or is particularly satisfying?

I enjoy the variety and levels of complexity of the role, wearing many hats and shifting gears on demand. It is particularly satisfying to be able to help students with issues relating to careers and undergraduate and postgraduate employment.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

Consider the issue, select the best option, and move forward with a positive attitude

What is something about yourself that most of your colleagues wouldn't know?

I’m a Trekkie! My love of languages has sparked an interest in learning to speak Klingon but so far I haven’t had much ‘qupla’.

Where do you buy your coffee on campus?

I have three favourite spots, all strategically located as I go about my work.

What do you like most about the University?

The Parkville campus combines beautiful grounds to stroll in, heritage buildings to marvel, and proximity to Lygon Street. I love the Public Lectures and Tuesday bands (even if the music genre is not to my liking) it really hits home what a beautifully vibrant community Melbourne is.
