2016 – another great year for the University of Melbourne

May 17 / 193

This year’s annual report, containing a wealth of information relating to the University's activities and achievements for the 2016 year, was tabled in parliament this week.

“The University’s annual report is a beautiful snapshot of the year that’s been,” says Vice-Principal, Policy and Projects Julie Wells. “It’s compiled in accordance with legislative and other requirements determined by State Government but over time it’s a valuable repository, detailing both hard data and the stories behind the University’s successes year on year.”

Highlights from the 2016 Report include:

* the University’s rise to 40 on the Academic Ranking of World Universities for the first time in our history and registering, for two consecutive years, our place at 33 on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings

* inspirational examples of individual student and staff achievements

* stories of research impact and engagement, with the University leading combined funding awarded by National Health and Medical Research Council and Australian Research Council

* innovation in teaching and learning, and seven new fully-online programs offered during 2016 for Graduate Online

* A successful year for the Campaign for the University of Melbourne, with an increase in the quality and quantity of alumni engagement.

The year was also marked by the University’s adoption of a clear set of organising principles for sustainability based on three closely related themes – organisational, financial and environmental. As the Vice-Chancellor has commented: “This approach creates renewed confidence that we will continue to work from a position of strength.”

Following the structure of Growing Esteem, the annual report also includes stories for each of the main chapters highlighting how teaching and learning, research, engagement and sustainability work on the ground, across all our campuses.

The annual report represents the combined efforts of staff across all campuses, led by Policy and Projects in Chancellery and coordinated by a small team in External Relations including the Corporate Communications and Design and Print teams.
