Assistant Lecturer in European Union (EU) politics and PhD student Sophie Di Francesco-Mayot has undertaken an internship at the diplomatic corps of the European Union in Brussels.

Ms Di Francesco-Mayot recently submitted her PhD paper on the “Crisis of the French Socialist Party in Contemporary France” to the School of Social and Political Sciences.

She said the internship was an opportunity to develop practical experience of the day-to-day business of the European Commission in an international environment.

“It lets me to put into practice the knowledge and experience I gained throughout my academic studies,” she said.

As the European Union's diplomatic corps and foreign ministry, the European External Action Service (EEAS) conducts European foreign and security policy.

Ms Di Francesco-Mayot worked in the Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Maldives Division, where she monitored the Afghan presidential elections in April and worked to increase the effectiveness of the EU’s assistance to Pakistan and Afghanistan.

She participated in daily conferences, roundtable meetings and seminars organised either by her division, the Concilium, the Asia-Oceania Working Party (COASI) and the European Centre Institute for Asia Studies (EIAS).

As a Young Professional in Foreign Policy member, she also had fortnightly meetings with an advisor to discuss career avenues in foreign policy.

Ms Di Francesco-Mayot said she has enjoyed interning for the EEAS, and being involved with ASEM, an inter-regional forum (Asia-Europe meeting).

“It has deepened my knowledge of the internal intricacies of the EU institutions and has broadened my professional network,” she said.

“I hope to be able to use this knowledge and experience in Canberra at the Delegation of the European Union to Australia or in one of the European Centres in Australia.”
