What is your unit?

The Advancement Office

What is your job title?

Alumni Relations Coordinator

How long have you been with the University of Melbourne?

I first worked for the University many years ago, when the School of Graduate Studies opened. I left to pursue other interests but ended up working here again when the Themis project first started, about 10 years ago. I left one more time for seven years and, you guessed it, I’m back again, working part-time in the Advancement Office.

How did you come to work at the University?

This latest position came about because the Alumni Relations team was looking for someone who could assist with several key Alumni events including the Welcome to Melbourne Program, Festival of Ideas Reception and various reunions throughout the year. I have a background in event management and Public Relations, so it suited everyone.

Describe your typical day

At the moment, the majority of my time is spent on promoting and recruiting hosts for our Semester 2 Welcome to Melbourne Program, where alumni and staff volunteers provide a local ‘friendly’ face for AusAid international students by inviting them for dinner.

I am also working on the upcoming Festival of Ideas Reception, which will be a fantastic opportunity for alumni, staff and friends of the Uni to celebrate the culmination of this week-long event.

What is it about your job that holds your interest or is particularly satisfying?

I very much enjoy the diversity of managing events as well as the communication and relationship development aspects of working with alumni. They are a vital and important group whose contributions help make the University such a success.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

From my mother….always be yourself, and be true to yourself.

What is something about yourself that most of your colleagues wouldn't know?

I am a long-time motorcyclist, and ride a 1000cc sportbike. I also own and run a small business called Botanique Skin and Spa.

Where do you buy your coffee on campus?

There are so many new outlets now on campus compared to last time I was working here, but the Advancement Office is on Barry Street, so we tend to get ours from Seven Seeds.

What do you like most about the University?

It is a very unique environment here compared to other workplaces, of which I’ve seen a few! It is very stimulating in a variety of ways. I love the location, the architecture and history of the place, the staff benefits and the opportunities one can access.

Applications to be a host in the Welcome to Melbourne program close on 30 June. For information: www.unimelb.edu.au/alumni/welcometomelbourne
