The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences Professor Stephen Smith has announced with some sadness his departure from the University citing a change in his family circumstances.

“I’ve had a wonderful time in Australia and have enjoyed immensely working with the Faculty and the senior leadership of University and our partners, but I’ve made the decision to return home to England for family reasons,” said Professor Smith.

Acting Vice-Chancellor and Provost, Professor Margaret Sheil said Professor Smith was appointed to the University with a remit to build on the substantial strengths of the Faculty and position it amongst the top 10 medical faculties in the world.

“As Dean, he has overseen the restructure of the Faculty, appointed outstanding Heads of School, and established clear research directions for the Faculty which include broader and deeper relationships with our partners in health services and medical research institutes.

“Stephen’s international experience, combined with his energy and enthusiasm have resulted in a legacy disproportionate to the time he has spent in Melbourne which will be a tremendous platform for his successor,” said Professor Sheil.

Professor Mark Hargreaves, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research Partnerships & External Relations) and Professor of Physiology, will take on the role of Dean from September 14 guiding the faculty through to the likely appointment of a successor to Professor Smith to commence early in 2016.

“I’m honoured and excited to work with my faculty colleagues and our many partners during this important period for the Faculty,” he said.

Professor Sheil said that prior to becoming Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Hargreaves was Program Director for the Bachelor of Biomedicine and was instrumental in its successful implementation as part of the Melbourne Curriculum.

“Professor Hargreaves has also been working closely with our key partners and will have the support of the senior leadership of the Faculty to continue their outstanding work in the months ahead.”
