The Firebird Trio will launch their performance season at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music in the University’s first 2011 Melba Hall lunch hour concert on 28 February.

The concert will include performances of the Mozart Piano Trio in B flat K.502, and the Piano Trio in A minor by Maurice Ravel.

Alumni and staff members Benjamin Martin (piano), Zoë Black (violin) and Josephine Vains (cello) recently formed the chamber music ensemble.

Ms Vains said all three members had many years' experience with chamber music, having played in many other ensembles in Australia and Europe.

“When the Freshwater Trio disbanded last year, we formed this new ensemble with pianist Benjamin Martin, who we had worked closely with before and whose playing we admired,” she said.

“You could say that the timing was right, and that our musical personalities are wonderfully matched.”

Ms Vains said she was particularly happy to be opening the lunchtime concert series because “like any art form, it's extremely important students are not educated in a bubble, but rather that they can experience the realms of what might be possible in their future.

“We were all students once!” she said.

The Firebird Trio will present their inaugural concert series, WANDERLUST, at the Melbourne Recital Centre and Montsalvat this year.

“We will perform an enjoyable and accessible range of music spanning four centuries. The first concert on April 13 features Beethoven's 'Archduke' trio and a world premiere of 'Fanfares' composed by our pianist, Benjamin Martin,” Ms Vains said.
