This October, University running and riding teams will join in two of the most widely patronised community events on Melbourne's sporting calendar.

For runners, the Melbourne Marathon, one of Australia’s iconic sporting events, has a distance to suit everyone.

James Garland, from Melbourne University Sport, said: “On Sunday, 9 October, the University community is invited to run or walk 3km with friends, family, fellow students or colleagues, run the 42.195km Marathon or complete any one of several distances in between, from 5km and 21.1km”.

“People who would prefer to ‘two-wheel’ it around Port Phillip Bay can join the team for Bicycle Victoria’s Around the Bay in a Day. This event, on Sunday, 16 October, has ride options varying from 50km to 250km.”

Mr Garland said the University fielded teams for these two major sporting events to allow all students, staff and alumni the opportunity to represent the University and feel a sense of unity.

“Events such as these allow the University Community to undertake some physical activity, helping to improve the general health and fitness across all participants,” he said.

“Strong participation numbers in events such as the Melbourne Marathon and Around the Bay show the University’s great presence in the City of Melbourne.

“I encourage all students, staff and alumni to register and become involved.”

Whichever event participants choose, they can register to participate as a University of Melbourne team member.  Members of the University community who join will receive a free University singlet or t-shirt for the Melbourne Marathon or a free cycling jersey for Around the Bay in a Day.

The new 2011 uniform numbers are limited for both events; first in, best dressed.
