Crews from the Melbourne University Boat Club have beaten teams from Oxford University as well as from Korea and Japan to win the STX Korean Universities Cup.

The University’s crew, selected from college rowers (first and second year undergraduates), were guests of Rowing Korea.

MUBC’s Director of Rowing Alex Henshilwood accompanied the team.

“MUBC has a long history of competing in international events be they invitational or representational such as the Olympics, World and Under 23 Championships,” he said.

“An amazing 34,000 people came to the course to watch the regatta and saw the University crew win.”

Mr Henshilwood said MUBC had ties with Korean rowing before this event - three members of the club  including President Peter Antonie competed at the Seoul Olympics  - so were familiar with the course.

The team was recruited after the College Regatta from oarsmen who showed interest in the event.

The winning crew comprised Will Smibert, Nick Bernard, Jordan Smith, Gary Butcher, Russell George, Will Hannemann, Stuart Alexander, Charles Hammond and Frankie Rickard, with Mike Steele as coach and Mr Henshilwood as coordinator and manager.

The invitational event was the first competition held by Rowing Korea, as there are only 700 rowers in total in the country, despite hosting the Olympics in 1988.

The STX Korean Universities Cup is the first of several initiatives designed to increase awareness of rowing in Korea, and the country’s global rowing image.

The Asian round of the London 2012 Olympic qualifying regatta is being held in Seoul and the city has been awarded the 2013 World Rowing Championships.
