Hello and welcome to My Melbourne. I’m Stavroula Psonis and today I’m joined by Ruby Lee.

What is your official title?

I’m the Digital Communications Manager at the Advancement office.

How long have you been with the University?

A little more than three years now.

Do you have a typical working day?

One of my responsibilities is to look after the social media presence for alumni. Usually when I get in to work I look at the different news feeds from the newsroom, from different social media channels, from marketing or faculty social media channels, work out what is interesting or suitable to post on the alumni networks. That’s the typical thing I do but the content differs every day, so that is quite interesting.

What is your favourite thing about working for the University?

My favourite thing is getting to know different research that is being done here. Last year I managed a Campaign launch video project and through that project I interviewed different academics and researchers. For example I interviewed an academic doing research on epilepsy and she told me that possibly in the future we could eliminate some genes and there will be no epilepsy illness. Another scientist told me there is a way to insert iron into rice to help with the problem about lack of nutrition in third world countries. I think these things are very interesting and I wouldn’t have found out about them if I didn’t work here.

Where is your favourite place to go for food or drinks at the University?

I don’t get to the campus much because we are located in Barry Street near the Law Building. But when I do go I quite like Tsubu, it adds a different feel to the campus, it has a great Asian feel among all the sandstone buildings.

Since you have been here have you received any advice you’d like to share with us?

For my own experience, I have joined different professional networks like the Alumni Relations network and the Social Media Professional group, it’s a great way to get to know people who also work in your area and find out what other people are doing.

Does your office have any upcoming events you would like to share with us?

As part of a professional development program called Advantage, I’m going to re-run a presentation in May I gave overseas a few weeks ago which is on the topic ‘Social Media Tactics and Alumni Relations’. If anyone is interested they can email me:

And finally, is there something you would like to share with us that your colleagues might not know about you?

Most of my colleagues would know because of my work I am quite active in the social media space, but I don’t think most people know what my twitter handle is: @rubylee.
