Vice-Chancellor Professor Glynn Davis presents Professor Gordon Lynch with his award for the top media performer in 2013

The University has celebrated its academics’ engagement with the media at an event acknowledging the great work of its top media performers in 2013.

The celebration, organised by University Communications, included awards for the five academics who received the most media mentions in 2013. They  were:

•Professor Gordon Lynch, who was the University’s leading commentator, (1208 mentions) for his regular ABC health and fitness segment.

•Dr. Lauren Rosewarne, for comments on a range of issues across 2013, including a large number of comments on television habits (786 mentions).

•Professor David Karoly, for comments about the hotter Australian Summer and Climate Change (635 mentions).

•Associate Professor Roger Wilkins, for comments relating to the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey (594 mentions).

•Vice-Chancellor Professor Glyn Davis, for comments relating to the Government announcing a $2.8b cut to tertiary funding (578 media mentions).

Professor Davis said it was important academics engaged with the media and through them, the wider public to share their expertise and inform public debate.

“It’s not just about communicating knowledge, it’s about what we say to the community about who we are,” he said.

Professor Lynch said representing the University in this way was a special thing, and something academics should encourage their colleagues to do.

“I hope we can spread that message, because engaging with the media is a very important thing we should do, not just in representing the University but by communicating our messages to the public.”

The University received 48, 000 mentions in the media last year, a 19 per cent increase on 2013, and 67 per cent on 2012.
