The University Library has held its second annual Edible Book competition to celebrate the International Year of Reading.

Special guest judge Stephanie Alexander joined library staff for the event. Ms Alexander
trained as a librarian at the University before deciding to pursue a culinary career.

Entrants created 'edible books', cakes or other foodstuffs related to their chosen book.
Entries were judged on creativity, visual appeal and culinary interpretation of the book.

The winner was the Meet Mr Men cake by Joyce Bowden. Second prize went to The Very
Hungry Caterpillar
by Kylie Hill, while third was Donna McRostie's Shoe Lust.

The Library's Director of Information Management, Donna McRostie, came across the
competition last year and thought it would be a great way to bring library staff together.

"It was a huge success, with 21 entries from Library staff this year, all of which displayed a
mixture of wit, creativity, innovation and baking brilliance," Ms McRostie said.

The International Edible Book Festival has been held in many countries
since 2000.

In addition to the official places, Provost Division staff voted for a people's choice award,
which raised close to $300 for the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation.

In 2013 competition will be open to all Provost's Division staff, and all University employees will be
invited to view the culinary creations and vote for their favourites.
